Gordon Brown praises Prof Yunus's initiatives in stabilizing Bangladesh’s economy

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus held a telephone conversation on Friday with former British prime minister Gordon Brown, who praised Yunus’s initiatives to stabilize the economy and promote inclusive growth.

The discussion focused on Bangladesh’s ongoing efforts toward economic recovery and the urgent need to improve educational opportunities for Rohingya refugee children.

Gordon Brown, who currently serves as the United Nations special envoy for global education, commended Professor Yunus for his leadership in guiding Bangladesh through economic challenges.

Both leaders expressed deep concern over the educational plight of Rohingya children living in refugee camps in Bangladesh.

With over half a million children lacking access to formal education, they stressed the critical importance of providing learning opportunities to avoid creating a “lost generation.”

“We must ensure that Rohingya children grow up with hope and the tools to build a better future,” said Professor Yunus, reaffirming his government’s commitment to mobilizing support for the Rohingya community.

Gordon Brown expressed his willingness to collaborate with Bangladesh to expand educational programs in the camps, drawing on his global advocacy for education.

He also indicated interest in visiting Bangladesh in the coming months to assess the situation firsthand and explore potential avenues for support.

The conversation also covered broader issues of mutual interest, including the interim government’s reform agenda and its role in ensuring a peaceful transition to democracy.
