Transport for London (TfL), a local government body responsible for most of the transport network in London, United Kingdom, will provide support to Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) to improve the traffic system of Dhaka.
DNCC Administrator Md Mahmudul Hasan said this after British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Sarah Cooke paid a courtesy call on him at the former's office in Dhaka’s Gulshan on Monday.
He said: “TfL will provide the DNCC with technical support in network management, bus operation and safety to improve traffic management. It will initiate their operation at Gulshan 1 to 2 as a test run. A delegation of TfL inspected the traffic management of Gulshan in July.”
He further said that by exchanging knowledge and experience with TfL, the city corporation can establish a modern transport system in Dhaka.
“The experience of London's bus franchise model and traffic signal systems will be invaluable to us. Based on the results of the pilot project in Gulshan, we will develop a comprehensive plan for the entire transport system in Dhaka,” he said.
The administrator said the DNCC will undertake integrated activities with other stakeholders to modernize Dhaka's transport system.
A memorandum of understanding was inked between the DNCC and the UK's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) to modernize the transport system, improve traffic signals, and alleviate traffic congestion in the DNCC area in November last year.
