The United States has emphasized the need for thorough investigations into civilian casualties during recent protests and the subsequent crackdown, also calling for full accountability for those responsible.
Matthew Miller, spokesperson for the US State Department, made the statement during a daily briefing on Monday in Washington.
He responded to questions about Bangladesh Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus's assertion that the protests were meticulously designed.
"There need to be full investigations into the civilians who lost their life during the protests and the crackdown on the protests in recent months, and there needs to be full accountability for anyone responsible," Miller said.
In response to another question about the killing of a garment worker in Ashulia, he said: "Let me take that one back and get you an answer."
When asked about press freedom following the detention of journalists Shakil Ahmed, Farzana Rupa, Mozammel Babu, Shyamal Dutta and Mahmudur Rahman without bail, Miller remarked: "We want to see press freedoms upheld in Bangladesh and of course across the world."
