Minister of Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) Muhammad Tajul Islam on Thursday recalled Russian contribution to Bangladesh's independence and subsequent growth and said Dhaka-Moscow relations would always be there for the people.
"It'll never be torn. We consider Russia as they have taken steps (across the world) to rescue distressed people. I am not saying this as a minister. This is the belief of common people," he said while speaking at the embassy at the celebration of the 52nd anniversary of diplomatic relations between Bangladesh and Russia.
Russia supported Bangladesh during the Liberation War in 1971. Soon after independence, the then-Soviet Union established diplomatic relations on January 25, 1972.
The LGRD minister recalled that Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman visited Moscow amid a rousing reception.
He said Russia also helped resume Chittagong port by sweeping mines free of charge.
Russian Ambassador Alexander Mantytskiy said there had been a “meaningful" interaction between the countries since the beginning of the diplomatic relations.
People have been the solid basis of the relationship, he said, adding that "fruitful cooperation" has been developing across many sectors despite global turmoil.
With the new government in Bangladesh, he said: "It is my earnest effort that the ties will continue to thrive for the peace and prosperity of the people."
Bangladeshi and Russian artists enthralled the evening with music and dance performances.
