Bangladesh condemns 'despicable act' of burning Holy Quran in Stockholm

Bangladesh "strongly condemns the despicable act" of burning a copy of the Holy Quran on Wednesday outside a mosque in Stockholm, the foreign ministry said in a statement.

"Bangladesh expresses grave concern over such heinous act of insulting the sacred values and religious symbols of the Muslims in the name of ‘freedom of expression'. Bangladesh yet again urges all concerned to put an end to such unwarranted provocations for the sake of harmony and peaceful coexistence," read the statement.

The foreign ministry posted the statement on its official Facebook page on Thursday.

This comes as Salwan Momika, a 37-year-old who fled to Sweden several years ago, under a heavy police presence on Wednesday stomped on the Quran before setting several pages alight in front of Stockholm's largest mosque.

Police in the Swedish capital had granted him a permit for the protest in line with free-speech protections, but said later they had opened an investigation into the man over "agitation".

The incident occurred as Muslims around the world began marking the Eid al-Azha holiday and as the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia was drawing to a close.

In January, a Swedish-Danish right-wing extremist burned a copy of the Quran near the Turkish embassy in Stockholm, also triggering outrage in the Muslim world.
