Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday expressed profound sadness over Prince Charles having contracted Covid-19.
The Prince of Wales is currently in the process of recovery.
“I have always commended with great admiration your personal and institutional leadership towards attaining the Sustainable Development Goals and the conservation of our common heritage and the environment,” she said in a letter sent to Prince Charles.
The Prime Minister also said she is eagerly expecting the prince’s recovery, so that he may continue his wholehearted campaign and advocacy for addressing the water and the climate crisis, and also his invaluable philanthropic work to champion the education and livelihoods of young people in the Commonwealth.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also warmly welcomed the inauguration of the British Asian Trust in Bangladesh to promote social enterprise and ensure the mental health of young people, issues which are of high priority in Bangladesh’s national sustainable development agenda.
The prime minister reiterated Bangladesh’s stand along with the diaspora in the UK in the fight to curb Covid-19 and deal with its aftermath.
She also informed the prince of the domestic Covid-19 situation and also preemptive measures taken to save the people of Bangladesh from being affected by the extremely contagious SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.
The letter reads: “Our government acted very seriously. with the strongest preventive measures from the very early stages of the global outbreak, including screening of passengers on arrival at the airport and introduction of dedicated quarantine zones near the airport as early as January 2020."
Sheikh Hasina also said she personally suspended all celebrations and gatherings for the eagerly anticipated birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman this month, shut down all educational institutions and announced a full lockdown from March 25 advising people to stay at home.
"We have designated hospitals and fully equipped health professionals to handle affected patients. Due to all these extreme measures, we have been able to contain Covid-19 confirmed cases in Bangladesh to 48, with five unfortunate deaths and 15 recoveries.”
