Deserting BGP member to be returned to Myanmar Sunday

Bangladesh will hand over a member of Myanmar’s Border Guard Police (BGP) – who was detained for trespassing into Bangladesh through the Lembuchhari border point – to Myanmar on Sunday.

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has completed all preparations to hand him over to Myanmar authority through the Tumbru border point in Naikhongchhari upazila.

According to local sources, the Myanmar army personnel Aung Bo Thin will be returned after a meeting between BGB and BGP at Tumbru border point around 11am Sunday.

Earlier on January 24, locals captured Bo Thin while he was roaming around in the hill areas inside Bangladesh territory, and handed him over to the Bhallukhyaia BGB camp.

Upon his detention, Bo Thin said he is a resident of Yangon in Myanmar and a member of the Libi 287 battalion of the Myanmar Army.

He also said he had been assigned to duty at Bendula camp near the Lembuchhari border point. He entered Bangladesh fleeing from his camp.

Later when he was interrogated by the BGB 11 battalion members, Bo Thin said he fled into Bangladesh on his own as he did not like to perform the duties at Bendula camp.

Naikhongchhari BGB Lieutenant Colonel Azim told Dhaka Tribune: “We have taken all preparations. He will be handed over to Myanmar authority on Sunday.”
