AMAR EKUSHEY BOI MELA

Diverse themes blanket stall decorations, greet visitors

From Jamdani saris to the Gaza war, a wide array of subjects can be seen in the decoration of stalls in the month-long Amar Ekushey Boi Mela on the Bangla Academy premises in Dhaka.

Publishing houses have mostly highlighted Bengali heritage, culture, folklore, and crafts while showcasing the memories of the Language Movement and the Liberation War through the decoration of their stalls.

Additionally, contemporary international developments, human rights issues, and conflicts have also been focused on in some stalls.

Visiting the fair, this correspondent noticed this interesting feat, which is based on creativity.

An official of the publishing house told Dhaka Tribune that a book by artist Chandra Shekhar Saha featuring Jamdani Sari will be launched soon.

“Basically, the theme of our stall is completely based on the book," the official added.

Meanwhile, Adarsh Publications has brought forth the issue of inhuman conditions and genocide caused by the Israel-Palestine war.

They said they wanted to remind the visitors through their decorations of the humanitarian crisis going on in Gaza.

Satisfied with the theme, visitor Nafiul Aleem said: “The ongoing Israel-Palestine war is a deterioration of humanity as a number of people are being killed.

“So, I think the decoration at the Adarsha Publications stall clearly shows that harrowing fact.”

Akash Publication has set up a “haat” at the book fair, incorporating Bengali art and crafts in their decoration.

Talking about it, publisher Alamgir Sikder Loton said: “We’re always keen to be unique and authentic in decorating our stall in every edition of the fair.

“This year, the stall was decorated and designed with a thoughtful incorporation of Bengali culture, art, and craft.”

Even though he voiced his dismay at a poor sale of books, the publisher said they always prioritize creativity in decorating their stall.
