EC: Carrying or transferring another person’s NID is prohibited

The Election Commission (EC) has stated that carrying or transferring another person’s National Identity Card (NID) is prohibited.

This information was revealed in a letter signed by Md Ruhul Amin Mallik, director of the Public Relations Department of the Election Commission Secretariat, on Thursday.

The letter states that the Bangladesh Election Commission has noticed that, under the guise of election campaigning, certain individuals are collecting voters’ personal information and National Identity Cards (NIDs). According to the National Identity Card Registration Act 2010, carrying or transferring another person’s NID is not permitted.

It further states that under Rule 4 of the Code of Conduct for Political Parties and Candidates in Parliamentary Elections, 2025, no political party, candidate, or anyone acting on their behalf may provide or promise to provide any form of donation, contribution, or gift to individuals, groups, or institutions residing within the electoral area.

The letter adds that such activities constitute punishable offences under the rules. The Election Commission has urged all citizens and organizations to refrain from engaging in these activities.

It may be noted that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has recently submitted a complaint to the Election Commission alleging that Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has been collecting voters’ NIDs under the cover of election campaigning.

According to the Election Commission, the total number of voters in the country stands at 127,695,183. Of these, 64,814,907 are male voters, 62,879,042 are female voters, and 1,234 belong to the third gender category. The final voter list has been prepared, including all citizens who turned 18 years of age by 31 October of the current year.

Under the revised election schedule, election campaigning began on Thursday and will continue until 7:30am on February 10. Voting will take place on February 12 from 7:30am to 4:30pm.
