Upazila Polls: EC summons State Minister Mohibbur for violating code of conduct

The Election Commission has summoned the State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief and MP from Patuakhali-4 constituency Mohibbur Rahman, for violating the electoral code of conduct.

He has been asked to appear before the Election Commission at Nirbachan Bhaban in Agargaon on Sunday afternoon with an explanation.

On Friday, the EC's Senior Assistant Secretary Mohammad Shahjahan informed this decision to the state minister through a letter.

The fourth phase upazila election is scheduled to take place in this upazila on Wednesday.

According to the letter, during the relief distribution in Rangabali upazila, the minister publicly asked for votes for chairman candidate Saidu Jaman Mamun, vice-chairman candidate Rowshan Mridha, and female vice-chairman candidate Ferdousi Parvin.

This was broadcast on various media outlets and social media.

As a government beneficiary and a highly important person, campaigning for anyone violates the code of conduct.

The EC has asked why legal actions should not be taken and has summoned him to personally appear before the commission at 3pm on Sunday to explain the matter, the letter reads.

The upazila elections have already completed three phases on May 8, May 21, and May 29.

The fourth phase will take place on June 5, followed by postponed elections in another 20 upazilas on June 9.
