A man was stabbed while hanging posters to conduct election campaign for an independent candidate at Matlab upazila in Chandpur. Some other activists were beaten up at the same time.
The incident took place in the Pachani area of the upazila on Wednesday around 7:30pm when a poster with the eagle symbol was being hung.
The injured man was identified as Azizul Haque. He was working as the activist of the independent candidate M Isfaq Ahsan in the Chandpur- 2 constituency.
Sources said Azizul Haque and some others went to hang up posters in front of a shop in Pachani.
At that time, a group of people led by Kalakanda UP Chairman Sobhan Sarkar Shuva, a follower of the Awami League candidate, allegedly attacked them.
At one point, Azizul Haque was stabbed in the stomach while others were also beaten up.
Injured Azizul Haque said: "We were busy putting up posters. Suddenly, the chairman came with his men and attacked us. Some other activist were severely beaten. At one point, he stabbed me in the stomach with a knife.”
Matlab North Police Station Officer-in-Charge Rashed Mubarak said: "We sent the police force to the spot after receiving information about the incident of fighting and preventing poster hanging in that area. Legal action will be taken after knowing the details.”
In this regard, the activists of the independent candidate complained that the supporters of the boat have been attacking the supporters of the independent candidate for the past few days.
Two cases have been filed against the Kalakanda UP chairman.
However, Kalakanda Union Chairman Sobhan Sarkar Shuva denied the allegations, saying: "They are making false accusations against me because I am working for the boat symbol. They have filed a case. I think that the administration will take action after a proper investigation of the incident.”
