Independent candidate Moniruzzaman Monir has appealed to the Election Commission (EC) seeking the cancellation of the candidature of Awami League party candidate Barrister M Shahjahan Omar from the Jhalakathi-1 constituency.
He alleged that information about a case against Shahjahan Omar was concealed in the affidavit.
He submitted the appeal through his representative on Saturday.
Moniruzzaman also appealed to the EC to have his candidature restored before filing the appeal against the Awami League candidate.
The returning officer rejected Monir's candidature on the allegation that the list of signatures of 1% of the voters needed to be corrected.
When asked about this, Moniruzzaman said: "I have appealed to the EC to get back my candidature. And the aggrieved people appealed against Shahjahan Omar. An appeal has been filed seeking cancellation of his candidature for concealing information about the case.”
It should be noted that according to information with the EC, the name of Moniruzzaman has been given as the plaintiff. Nayabari Indrapasha village of Rajapur upazila has been mentioned as his village home. A person named Zakir submitted that appeal.
According to the schedule announced by the Election Commission, the deadline for submission of nomination forms was November 30.
A total of 2,741 nomination papers were submitted against 300 constituencies across the country.
A total of 30 out of 44 registered political parties submitted their nomination forms to contest the election.
Of the aspirants, the most, 298 candidates, are from the Awami League, 289 from JaPa, 230 from Trinamool BNP, 90 from JaSoD, and 82 from the BNM.
The scrutinization of nomination papers started on December 1 and continued till Monday.
The deadline for filing and disposing of appeals against the returning officer's decision is December 5-15, and the last date for withdrawing candidacy is December 17.
The returning officers will allocate symbols on December 18.
The 12th parliamentary election will be held on January 7, as per schedule announced by Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal on November 15.
