National polls: EC allows 29 more local observers

The Election Commission on Wednesday allowed 29 more local observers to monitor the upcoming 12th national parliamentary election.

These observers will get registration for five years, said the EC in a statement released in the evening.

With the new approvals, the total number of registered local observers now stands at 96.

EC Additional Secretary Ashok Kumar Debnath confirmed the matter.

Earlier, the Election Commission registered 67 monitoring organizations in the first phase.

The deadline for local observer organizations to apply was November 25.

EC extended the time to December 10 due to the lack of response.

The Election Commission has been granting election observer registration for election monitoring since 2008.

At that time, 138 organizations received registration.

The most recent was in 2018 when the Election Commission registered 118 organizations.

The five-year tenure for those organizations ended on July 11.
