Opposition parties protest against announcement of polls schedule

As Bangladesh awaits Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal to announce the schedule of 12th national elections, opposition parties have decided to launch immediate protests nationwide.

Meanwhile, as the first day of the fifth phase of the blockade program of the BNP and its allies is going on, a decision has been taken to hold an immediate protest.

These parties include Jamaat, Left Democratic Alliance, Islamic Movement and some others.

Apart from this, strikes may be held next Sunday and Monday demanding the cancellation of the schedule, top leaders of opposition parties said.

Meanwhile, Islami Andolan Bangladesh brought out a mass procession protesting the government’s plant to announce the election schedule.

However, their march in Dhaka’s Shantinagar came to a halt amid police obstruction on Wednesday afternoon.

Party's Joint Secretary General Principal Maulana Syed Mosaddek Billah Al-Madani warned not to announce the election schedule and said protest marches will be held in all the districts on Thursday.

The procession started from the north gate of Baitul Mukarram around 3:30pm and was stopped by police at Shantinagar intersection when it reached there via Nightingale intersection and Kakrail.

Traffic on the road remained suspended since the procession resumed at 4:15pm.

When asked about the obstruction, Deputy Commissioner (Ramna division) Md Ashraf Hossain said they were not allowed to go more so that people do not suffer.
