The Election Commission (EC) has initially finalized a list of 68 agencies to observe the general election.
A public notice in this regard signed by EC Assistant Director (Public Relations) Ashadul Haque will be published in the form of an advertisement in the media on Wednesday. It will also be uploaded to the EC website.
The notice will include a 15-day time limit to voice demands or raise objections and complaints against the organizations.
After resolving the claims or objections, the EC will include the organizations as monitoring bodies for the next five years.
According to EC sources, 206 non-governmental organizations in the country applied to the EC for registration as election observation organizations. Later, a seven-member committee formed by the EC preliminarily scrutinized the applications and shortlisted 68 organizations.
Previously 118 organizations had EC registration whose five-year term ended on July 11. Among the organizations that applied this time, 40 organizations had been registered earlier.
Before the ninth general election in 2008, the procedure for registration of local observers was introduced. The matter was incorporated into the electoral law Representation of the People Order and the EC developed a local observer policy.
Earlier in 2008, EC registered 138 organizations as observers for the first time. Of these, 159,113 observers from 75 organizations observed the ninth election.
But even before this, local and foreign observers had the opportunity to observe elections.
A total of 218,000 observers from 69 local organizations observed the eighth national parliament election.
There were 81 national observation agencies monitoring the 11th general election held in 2018.
