Man held over attack on Islami Andolan mayor candidate during BCC polls

Police have detained a man in Barisal over Monday's alleged attack on Islami Andolan Bangladesh-backed mayor candidate Mufti Syed Muhammad Faizul Karim during the Barisal City Corporation (BCC) election.

The detainee was identified as Mainul Islam Swapan, 45, son of Harun-or-Rashid and a resident of ward no 22 of the city.

Anwar Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Barisal's Kotwali police station, confirmed the matter on Tuesday. 

A team of police detained him on Monday night on suspicion of being the main attacker, said the OC. 

However, no written complaint was lodged with the police on behalf of the candidate or the Islami Andolan Bangladesh till the filing of this report, police sources said.

Mufti Syed Muhammad Faizul Karim, and several other party men were injured in an attack allegedly carried out by Awami League activists.

Mufti Syed Muhammad Faizul Karim alleged that some 30-40 boat symbol supporters attacked them with sticks near Hatim Ali College after they left Sabera Khatun Girls' Secondary School polling centre on Monday.
