The allocation of electoral symbols, to candidates of all parties, has begun for the upcoming Gazipur City Corporation polls.
Independent mayoral candidate in GCC election, former mayor Jahangir Alam's mother Zayeda Khatun will contest in the election with a table clock symbol.
Symbol allotment began among the candidates for all posts in the GCC election at the office of the Returning Officer at the city's Bangataj Auditorium at 10am on Tuesday.
Returning Officer Faridul Islam first allotted symbols among the eight valid candidates for the post of mayor.
A total of five candidates supported by political parties among the contesting candidates for the mayoral post were given their respective party symbols
Dhaka TribuneTwo other independent candidates, Sarkar Shah Nur Islam, son of imprisoned BNP leader Nurul Islam Sarkar Roni got the elephant symbol and Harun-or-Rashid horse symbol.
Before starting of symbol allotment, Returning Officer Faridul Islam requested all the candidates to follow the electoral conduct rules.
Gazipur City Corporation election will be held on May 25.

Besides, 239 candidates will contest for the post of general councilor and 77 candidates for reserved seats.
Jahangir Alam's mother Zayeda Khatun Dhaka TribuneZayeda Khatun told the reporters after receiving the symbol: "I am a candidate for the election along with my son for the sake of protecting this city, for the welfare of the people. Elected by the people, I want to finish the incomplete works of the city. In the meantime, my son has done a lot of development work in the city, improved and renovated the roads. Besides I want to work for the development of the city, for the development of the city residents".
At that time, her son Jahangir Alam was next to Zayda Khatun.
