Awami League activists protest against cancelling Gaibandha-5 by-polls

Awami League leaders and activists along with their supporters brought out a protest march against the Election Commission for cancelling the by-election to Gaibandha-5 constituency over allegations of irregularities.

They marched at Saghata and Fulchhari upazila parishad square around 4pm on Wednesday.

At that time, the marching leaders and activists set fire to tires on the road in front of Fulchhari parishad square and Chowmatha intersection of Saghata-Bonarpara road.

Besides, leaders and activists of Saghata upazila Awami League took out a protest march. Later, the leaders and activists came to the party office of Awami League with the protest procession.

At the party office, Awami League candidate Mahmud Hasan Ripon protested the closure of polling at the press conference.

Ripon demanded publication of results of those polling centres where voting went unperturbed.

“The EC has cancelled the by-election for mysterious reasons. Results of those polling centres where voting went smoothly must be published while re-election has to be conducted at those polling centres where voting was suspended,” Ripon said.

Earlier, Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal cancelled the by-election to Gaibandha-5 constituency over allegations of irregularities.

He made the announcement Wednesday afternoon, a couple of hours after saying the election had gone out of control.
