Awami League rebel candidate Masud ‘assures’ of pulling out of Comilla mayoral race

Masud Parvez Imran has assured the Awami League of withdrawing his mayoral nomination for the upcoming Comilla City Corporation polls, according to senior party leader AFM Bahauddin Nasim.

The rebel mayoral candidate reached the decision at a meeting with central party leaders at its Dhanmondi office on Tuesday, Nasim told reporters after the meeting.

Masud would withdraw his nomination on Thursday, Nasim added.

Masud, his elder sister Anjum Sultana, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, Joint General Secretary Nasim and Office Secretary Biplab Barua, among others, were present at the meeting.

When contacted, Masud told Dhaka Tribune that they had had a lengthy discussion, and that he would announce whatever he decided on Thursday.

The Awami League nominated Arfanul Haque Rifat for the COCC mayoral race this year.

According to insider sources, the Awami League wanted to make sure there was only one mayoral candidate from the ruling party in the upcoming COCC polls.

However, there has been an internal conflict caused by rebel candidate Masud submitting his nomination.

The COCC polls are scheduled for June 15. Polls to six municipalities and 135 union parishads will also be held on the same day.

The deadline for filing nominations was May 17. Officials verified the nominations on May 19. Candidates have until Thursday to pull out of the race.

Polls symbols will be allotted to candidates on Friday.
