BNP candidate boycotts Adra UP by-polls in Comilla

The BNP candidate in the Adra Union Parishad by-polls in Barura upazila has boycotted the election after reports of attack from the opposition.

Parvez Hosssain, the BNP candidate, accused Awami League men of beating and injuring his partymen on Tuesday.

“Out of the nine polling centres, Awami League men took control of six. They beat my man who is admitted in hospital now. I am boycotting this election and will write a formal complaint about it.”

Meanwhile, there were reports of Awami League men beating and injuring at least 10 men of independent candidate Mahfuzur Rahman. They allegedly vandalized his vehicle also.

Kakoirtola Government Primary School polling centre Presiding Officer Jahangir Hossais said there was no clash in his centre and that only Awami League polling agents were present in the polling centre.

However, Awami League candidate Akhter Karim said: “The voting is taking place in a peaceful manner. I did not hear any news of chaos, I am hopeful to be the winner.”

Barura Upazila Election Officer Azharul Islam said: “I have not yet received any complaints regarding any clash; the voting is taking place peacefully.”
