BNP-blessed Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayoral candidate Tabith Awal's mother has claimed that she faced trouble while casting her vote through the electronic voting machine (EVM).
Nasrin Fatema Awal claimed she had to wait for more than 30 minutes to cast her vote at the Manarat Dhaka International School centre in Gulshan 2 on Saturday morning.
"The EVM was not functioning," Nasrin Fatema, who came to the polling centre along with Tabith and other members of her family, said.
When asked, Assistant Presiding Officer Farzana Sharmin said the booth's EVM connection was not working.
"It was changed and then she [Nasrin Fatema] was able to cast her vote and the entire process did not take much time," Farzana added.
Only two votes were cast in that booth till 9am, our correspondents report.
No polling agent of Tabith Awal was found in the booth while Awami League-backed mayoral candidate Atiqul Islam’s agent was present there.
Earlier in the morning, Tabith cast his vote at another polling booth of the same centre.
The voting in the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) elections began at 8am, using only the electronic voting machines (EVMs) in all polling centres.
This is the first ever EVM-only city polls being held in Bangladesh. The voting will continue without any break until 4pm.
