The Election Commission will decide on using EVMs in the January 30 elections

Awami League will contest the elections to Dhaka’s two city corporations whether the electronic voting machines (EVMs) are used or not, says the ruling party’s general secretary.

Obaidul Quader on Tuesday said that only the Election Commission would decide whether the machines would be used in the polls, slated for January 30.

“There’s no way to create debate over the use of EVMs,” he said.

Quader’s remarks came in response to recent demands from BNP that EVMs should not be used in the Dhaka city polls as they can be manipulated easily and used for vote rigging.

Quader, also road transport and bridges minister, made the remarks at an event held to unveil a plaque of a year-long program taken to celebrate the Mujib Year and distribute warm cloths among cold-hit people at Basurhat municipality zero point in Companiganj, Noakhali.

He said about 16,000 blankets were distributed among the cold-hit people in Kabirhat and Companiganj upazilas, which comprises Noakhali 5 constituency, apart from distribution of dry food among children and poor people.

Earlier, Noakhali 5 MP Quader also distributed blankets among the cold-affected people in Kabirhat.
