The Election Commission has scheduled to hold the third phase of upazila parishad (UP) elections on March 24.
Elections will be held in 127 upazilas of 25 districts under Rajshahi, Rangpur, Khulna, Barisal, Mymensingh, Chittagong and Dhaka divisions in the phase, said Election Commission Joint Secretary (Public Relation) SM Asaduzzaman.
The deadline for filing nomination papers has been set for February 26.
The nominations will be scrutinized on February 28, and after that, candidates will have till March 7 to withdraw from the race, the joint secretary said.
The commission plans to hold local elections in around 480 upazilas in five phases this year — starting from March 10.
The UP elections will be the first ones under the new Awami League government that came to power through the 11th general election, held on December 30 last year.
Election Commission Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed earlier told reporters that the upazila polls had been scheduled from March onwards after taking into consideration the Secondary School Certificate examinations in February, and the Higher Secondary School Certificate exams in April.
