Awami League and BNP mayoral candidates for the Sylhet City Corporation polls have cast their ballots.
The voting began at 8am on Monday and will continue till 4pm.
Awami League-backed Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran cast his vote at Government Pilot High School, around 8:50am; while BNP-backed candidate Ariful Haque Chowdhury cast his vote at Raynagar Government Primary School, around 8:25am.
Ariful claims that several ballot boxes were stuffed on Sunday night.
“I have information that a number of ballot boxes, filled with sealed ballot papers, were kept in the presiding officer’s almirah last night (Sunday).”
Refuting the BNP candidate’s claim, Kamran said: “The election is going on in a peaceful environment and with the support local voters showed me, I am confident about my victory.
“However, I am ready to accept any result.”
