BNP mayoral candidate for Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) election has demanded the cancellation of the ongoing city polls.
Mayoral candidate Hasan Uddin Sarker made his demands during a press briefing held at the district BNP office on Tuesday afternoon.
He made it clear, however, that if the Election Commission (EC) does not cancel the polls, he will participate in the election till the end.
"I will continue till the end," Hasan said. "I will show the people the irregularities that are going on, and unmask the government's non-democratic attitude towards the polls."
He said he will submit a written complaint to the returning officer. According to the complaint, ballot stuffing has been going on in 450 booths in 67 centres.
Hasan claimed that more than 100 of his supporters and polling agents were beaten and forced to leave the centres, and many of them were arrested.
"Awami League is continuing vote rigging on the highest levels," he alleged. "There is no one to stop their musclemen."
He further claimed that the ruling party is using the local administration and law enforcers to ensure victory for their candidate.
Vote casting in the Gazipur city polls began at 10pm and will continue until 4pm on Tuesday.
