An activist of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) of Nawab Abdul Latif hall of Rajshahi University (RU) yesterday allegedly humiliated the hall provost who attempted to search the room of the activist.
According to witnesses, Muhammad Hafiz, an activist loyal to RU unit BCL President Mizanur Rahman Rana, threatened hall provost Professor Biswanath Sikder brandishing a machete in presence of law enforcers. He also hurled abusive words at him.
The incident took place at 2pm when the provost, along with the police, attempted to search the room of Hafiz for the six routers, which were stolen on Thursday night from the north block of the hall.
Hafiz, a third year student of Islamic History and Culture, has been residing at room 206 illegally for a long time, a hall official told the Dhaka Tribune.
Moreover, Hafiz had the double occupancy room all to himself by showing his political power, the official added.
When the hall provost went to Hafiz’s room to search for the stolen devices, Hafiz dashed towards the provost and attempted to beat him with a machete.
Later, police, house tutors of the hall and few BCL men resisted Hafiz.
Police, however, did not take any action against Hafiz. They also did not seize the home-made weapons from him.
When contacted, hall provost Professor Biswanath Sikder acknowledged the incident and told that Hafiz was seeking an apology for his misconduct.
“I will inform the university VC to take action against him,” he added.
Muhammad Hafiz denied the allegation of brandishing a machete and admitted that he had asked for apology.
