Though the education standard in Bangladesh is lagging behind from the developed and technologically advanced countries, it is satisfactory compared to the other developing and a few neighbouring countries, claimed AK Azad Chowdhury, chairperson of the University Grants Commission.
He made the claim during a press briefing at Ruposhi Bangla Hotel in the capital yesterday,arranged to share the experience of the Bangladeshi delegates at the Going Global 2014 conference that took place in the US from April 29 to May 1.
The delegation from Bangladesh was led by Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid, while Azad Chowdhury was the deputy leader.
The UGC head said other education policy makers at the conference had praised Bangladesh’s education sector in terms of enrolment and access.
The education minister said he had learned a lot at the conference from the other education policy makers.
He said the experience would help him in his efforts to improve the country’s education standard.
The eight member Bangladeshi delegation also included BRAC Founder and Chairperson Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, former adviser to the caretaker government Rokia Afzal Rahman, UGC member Atful Hye Shibly, Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique, Buet Vice-Chancellor SM Nazrul Islam and Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry Director Haider Ahmed Khan.
Azad Chowdhury and Arefin Siddique said they had discussed with the vice-chancellors of the world’s top universities the possible opportunities for Bangladeshi students and teachers in exchange programmes.
Hosted by the British Council, the conference was attended by more than 1,500 delegates and took place at the Miami Beach International Convention Center.
