Angry USTC students block road in Chittagong

Students of University of Science and Technology Chittagong (USTC) barricaded Jakir Hossain Road in the Foy’s Lake area in Chittagong yesterday following an accident that injured one of their teachers.

According to police and university sources, the victim is Arman Ullah, assistant professor at the university’s Electrical and Electronics Department.

Arman was severely injured when a mini bus ran him down in front of Bangladesh Television, Chittagong centre in Foy’s Lake area on Monday.

He was taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital, but later was moved to a Dhaka hospital for better treatment, according to police.

The accident sparked an uproar among the USTC students, who took to the streets around 1:30pm and staged a demonstration to press home their three-point demand, with immediate arrest of the bus driver.

Vehicular movement on the street was suspended for an hour as hundreds of students set up a barricade, said Sub-Inspector Md Jahid Hossain of Khulshi police station.

On information, police and the USTC authority rushed to the spot and was able to calm the situation down.

Upon receiving assurance from the authorities that necessary measures would be taken regarding the accident, the students lifted the barricade around 2:30pm, the sub-inspector said.

The other two points of the three-point demand are: a foot over-bridge in the area, and all medical expenses of Arman to be paid by the USTC authorities.
