Begum Fazilatunnessa Memorial Trust established at DU

A memorial trust fund named ‘Bangamata Begum Fazilatunnessa Mujib Memorial Trust Fund’ was set up at Begum Fazilatunnessa Mujib Hall of Dhaka University on Monday.

In order to set up this fund, Provost of the halll Prof Sabita Rezwana Rahman handed over a cheque for Tk125,000 from the dormitory fund to DU Treasurer Prof Md Kamal Uddin.

DU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique, Dean of the Faculty of Science Prof Mohammad Yousuf Ali Mollah, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences Prof Farid Uddin Ahmed, Dean of the Faculty of Fine Art Prof Syed Abul Bark Alvi, Acting Registrar Syed Rezaur Rahman and House Tutors of the Hall were present on the occasion.

From the memorial trust, a discussion titled ‘Begum Fazilatunnessa Mujib Memorial Lecture’ will be organised and one meritorious female student will be awarded Begum ‘Fazilatunnessa Mujib Memorial Trust Gold Medal’ every year.

Besides, eight meritorious female students of the fall four from graduation and post-Graduation levels of different departments will be given scholarship every year.

VC Prof Arefin Siddique in his speech said Begum Fazilatunnessa Mujib had contributed a lot to the nation behind the screen besides looking after Bangabandhu’s family. Although she was a housewife, she had a strong personality and political farsightedness. For that reason she will be alive forever as a vast part of the history.

Fazilatunnessa Mujib was born on August 8, 1930 in Tungipara of Gopalganj.

During her entire life, she cooperated and inspired Bangabandhu directly and indirectly in allthe activities of Bangabandhu including democratic movements and liberation war of the country.

She was brutally killed at the age of 45 by a group of miscreants on the 15th August, 1975 with Bangabandhu and family at their Dhanmondi residence.
