Cabinet gives in-principle nod to Khulna Agriculture University

The cabinet yesterday agreed in-principle to establish an agriculture university in Khulna, in line with a 2011 pledge by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The approval of the “Khulna Agriculture University Act, 2013” came at a regular meeting of the cabinet chaired by the PM at the Secretariat.

“The new law proposes preparing the syllabus of the university in line with reality,” Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan told reporters afterwards, “And it includes a provision for a six-month internship at DAE after graduation so that students can have hands-on training and improve their efficiency.”

He also said there would be two agriculture entrepreneurs as syndicate members of the proposed university, nominated by the government.

At the same meeting, the cabinet also approved draft amendments to the University of Comilla and the University of Barisal acts, keeping provisions for appointing a pro-vice chancellor at the two institutions respectively.

“The posts of treasurerat the universities will be full-time, as per the amendments,” Mosharraf added.

The two amendment proposals had been approved in-principle at a cabinet meeting on September 2.
