Jahangirnagar University (JU) Proctor Prof Dr AKM Rashidul Alam has resigned following a 78-day student movement demanding his removal over alleged failure to ensure campus security.
The university administration accepted his resignation and appointed Prof Md Zakir Hossain of the Department of Philosophy as the new proctor.
The appointments were announced in separate office orders signed by Acting Registrar Prof ABM Azizur Rahman on Wednesday night.
The protests began after an outsider allegedly raped and attempted to murder a female student on the university campus on the night of May 12. Students accused the proctor of failing to ensure campus security and launched a movement demanding his resignation.
Earlier, on May 16, protesters locked the Proctor Office and vowed not to remove the lock until Prof Rashidul Alam stepped down. As a result, he had been unable to enter his office for 78 consecutive days.
The demonstrators also alleged that several serious incidents of violence had taken place on campus during his tenure and claimed he had failed to take effective measures to address them.
According to the office order, Prof Rashidul Alam was relieved of his duties at his own request.
In a separate order, the university appointed Prof Md Zakir Hossain as the acting proctor with effect from the afternoon of July 29 until further notice.
The order said he would discharge his responsibilities in accordance with the university's existing rules and regulations and enjoy the benefits attached to the post.
