The administration of Islamic University in Kushtia has suspended three persons in connection with the murder of Asma Sadia Runa, 35, chair and assistant professor of the university’s Social Welfare Department.
University Acting Registrar Professor Dr Monjurul Haque issued three separate official orders confirming the suspensions on Saturday.
According to the orders, two teachers and one official were suspended following a criminal case filed by the victim’s husband, Muhammad Imtiaz Sultan, on Wednesday.
During the suspension period, the individuals will continue to receive their allowances in line with university regulations.
The suspended individuals are Assistant Professor Shyam Sundar Sarker of the Social Welfare Department, Assistant Professor Habibur Rahman of the same department, and Biswajit Kumar Biswas, an assistant registrar of Ummul Mu'mineen Aisha Siddiqa Hall.
Commenting on the matter, Professor Dr Monjurul Haque said the suspension was necessary as the individuals’ names were mentioned in the murder case.
He also confirmed that a five-member investigation committee has been formed to probe the incident.
Earlier on Wednesday afternoon, Asma Sadia Runa was stabbed to death inside her office.
At the time of the incident, Fazlur Rahman, an employee of the Political Science Department, was also found seriously injured in the same room.
He was later taken to Kushtia General Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU).
