Freedom fighter grandchild quota canceled in medical admissions

The quota for grandchildren of freedom fighters in medical and dental colleges of the country has been canceled for the 2024-25 academic year.

The Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council has published the "Admission Policy-2025" for MBBS and BDS courses in medical and dental colleges/units. This policy now reserves 5% of seats only for freedom fighters, martyrs, and Birangona women.

On Monday, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare announced this policy.

Previously, in the 2024 admission policy, a 2% quota was allocated for the children and grandchildren of freedom fighters. However, in both cases, if there were vacant seats under this quota, they would be filled by students from the general merit quota based on their merit ranking.

In addition, the revised policy has reduced the marks allocation for GPA from the SSC and HSC exams. Earlier, 200 marks were allotted for GPA, but now it has been reduced to 100 marks.

A merit list will be prepared based on the GPA and the marks obtained in the written admission test to select candidates.

The policy states that for candidates recently passing the HSC exam, the merit list will be prepared by adding 10 times the GPA obtained in the SSC/equivalent exam and 10 times the GPA obtained in the HSC/equivalent exam, along with the marks obtained in the entrance exam.

However, for candidates who passed the HSC/equivalent exam in the previous year, 3 marks will be deducted from the total obtained marks, and for candidates who were admitted to government medical colleges/dental colleges/dental units in the previous year, 6 marks will be deducted from the total obtained marks to determine their position in the merit list.
