Quota Movement: JnU students stage protest rally

Students from Jagannath University held a protest rally protesting Thursday's attacks on students of various universities involved in the quota reform movement.

The rally took place in front of the campus on Friday afternoon.

They started a rally from the premises of the university's Arts Building. After that, they circled Victoria Park and gathered in front of the university's main gate. During this time, the protesters chanted slogans.

A protesting student said: “Yesterday (Thursday), our brothers were brutally attacked in Comilla, Chittagong, and Dhaka during their protest. Such attacks can not stop our movement. Locking the gates will not stop our protest. We will continue our movement until our demands are met."

Another student, Ivan Tahsib, said: "The student movement for quota reform has spread across the country. We have blocked areas in Dhaka and outside Dhaka. We need a fair quota system reform, which is why we have started this movement. We want justice for the attacks on students' justified demands."

Clashes between police and quota protesters left at least 30 people, including three policemen and journalists, injured in Dhaka, Comilla and Chittagong on Thursday.

Students and job seekers have been holding demonstrations across the country for some time demanding quota reform.

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Wednesday issued a status quo of four weeks on the issue of quotas, instructing the protesters to return to their classes and attend their exams.

Expressing their disappointment, the protesters rejected the order, announcing their intention to remain on the streets until their demand was met.
