The students of Comilla University (CoU) and nearby higher educational institutions have continued their "Bangla blockade" program demanding reform of quota in government jobs.
As part of their program, they have blocked the Dhaka-Chittagong highway, one of the most important highways in Bangladesh.
According to the pre-announced program, the students of CoU gathered at Kotbari Bishwa Road with various banners and posters from the campus.
As a result, the vehicular movement on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway was halted.
Under the banner of “anti-discrimination student movement”, the students say that they will continue the movement until their demands are met.
During a visit to the area, it was found that students were chanting slogans carrying the country's flag in their hands.
Many participants in the movement have come wearing shrouds. Some students also have written various slogans on the bare body.
They continued to speak and raise slogans in favour of abolishing all other quotas except for disabled and backward communities.
Saiful Malek Akash, student of Bangla Department of Comilla University, said: "We have blocked the Dhaka-Chittagong highway demanding the abolition of the quota system. The discriminatory quota system should be abolished. That is our only demand. We will continue this movement every day until our demands are met.”
Emran Hossain, a student of Bangla Department of Comilla Victoria Government College, said: "Eligible people don't get jobs because of quotas. That is why incompetents commit corruption. And the honour of the country is undermined. And the rich get richer. The number of the middle class continues to grow.”
Mohammad Shakib Hossain, one of the students of the law department of Comilla University and one of the movement coordinators, said: “Our program in Comilla has been continuing for the third day in coordination with all of Bangladesh. Our movement will continue until the circular of 2018 is upheld and the quota system is reformed. More strict programs may come in the future.”
The situation of traffic jams is getting worse as vehicular movement on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway remains suspended centering the program.
The students said that their program would continue till 8pm on Monday.
Earlier, the students blocked the Dhaka-Chittagong highway for three hours and four hours respectively on Thursday and Sunday.
