Amid protest from general students, the administration of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) has cancelled the seat of Imtiaz Hossain Rahim, a student of the 21st batch of the civil engineering department for his alleged involvement in facilitating the entry of leaders of Chhatra League’s entry on campus at midnight.
This information was given in a press release signed by Buet Registrar (additional charge) Professor Dr Md Forkan Uddin on Friday night.
Referring to the cancellation of the hall seat of Imtiaz Hossain Rahim (Student No.-2104141), the notification also mentions that an investigation committee will be formed to investigate the matter and to provide recommendations on the overall issue.
Action will be taken as per the rules of the university after receiving the report of the probe committee.
The release also informed that all the academic activities including graduation and post-graduation term or semester finals of the university will continue.
A group of students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) on Friday staged a demonstration on the university campus protesting the resumption of political activities by Chhatra League leaders and activists despite a ban.
The students claimed that the Chhatra League central leaders had organized a program at the campus around 1am amid the ban.
They also announced the boycott of the class examination on Saturday and Sunday with a six-point demand, including the expulsion of those involved in politics on the campus.
After the murder of Abrar Fahad on October 7, 2019, student politics was banned in Buet. On December 8, 2021, a Dhaka court sentenced 20 BCL leaders and activists to death and five others to life imprisonment for killing Abrar. Their appeals case is now pending with the High Court.
