Jagannath University (JnU) law department students on Monday held a procession and human chain demanding a fair trial for the death of fellow student Fairuz Abontika.
Teachers and students circled the entire campus during the procession and gathered in front of the Shaheed Minar in the morning, later participating in a previously announced human chain.
At the human chain, one of the students said: “Fairuz Abontika was a brilliant student. We cannot accept the loss of a fighter like her.”
They also demanded that those behind this incident be brought to justice and punished accordingly.
Law department student Enamul Haque Bijoy said: "Today's human chain carries the message that no such incidents of sexual harassment should occur at our university or anywhere else.
“We demand a fair trial through a proper investigation into this incident. Arrests are not enough,” he said, vowing to hold protests until justice is served.
Prof Dr Ali Akkas, chairman of the department, said: "It is necessary to properly investigate who was involved in Abontika's death. We organized a mourning procession on behalf of the department demanding exemplary punishment for the real culprits. Our demand is that law enforcement agencies conduct a proper investigation and identify the real offenders."
Another group of protesting students held a sit-in in front of the administrative building demanding justice for Abontika.
The protesters chanted slogans such as "Set oppressors’ throne on fire,” "Break and shatter the oppressors’ black hand” and "Students die on campus, what does the administration do?"
Fairuz Abontika, a student of the 2017-18 academic year of the JnU law department, was found dead at her Comilla residence after she accused her classmate Amman and teacher Din Islam in a Facebook post at around 10pm on Friday.
In the post, Abontika had claimed that Amman and Assistant Proctor Din Islam would be responsible for her death.
Hours after her death, massive protests broke out and continued till Monday, demanding justice for the student.
