More than 50 government primary schools at Mirzaganj upazila in the district have no headmaster and the institutions are run by inexperienced assistant teachers.
Students and guardians of those schools are deeply concerned pertaining to deteriorating academic standard and poor quality of education.
The inadequacy of teaching staff and meagre academic activity marking lots of management deficiency has virtually paralysed the education, said some guardians.
If the posts of headmasters are not fulfilled on an urgent basis, the primary education system may face serious setback in the region, opined the guardians.
Out of 142 schools, posts of headmasters and teachers at more than 100 schools have been lying vacant for long.
While visiting the schools, it was known that year after year, recruitment process of headmasters and assistant teachers at the schools has remained pending.
More than 50 schools including Uttar Chatra Govt Primary School, Uttar Mirzaganj Govt Primary School, Kalagachhia Govt Primary School, Bhajna Monoharkhali Govt Primary School, Mendiabad Govt Primary School, Uttar Paschim Subidkhali Govt Primary School, and Dakkhin Mirzaganj Govt Primary School are running without headmasters for long.
Acting headmaster at Uttar Chatra Govt Primary School Sanjay Das said: “There are more than 150 students at the school. I and another assistant teacher are running all the activities. When I have to go to different places for official and other purposes, the school is run by one teacher only.”
Ameer Hawlader, father of Rubina Aktar, and Anwar Hossain, father of Shahidul Islam, students of Class V at the school alleged that since there was no other school nearby, they had been compelled to send their kids there.
When contacted, Mizanur Rahman, the upazila education officer, said promotion to the posts of headmaster and appointment of assistant teachers would solve the problem.
Md Baktiar Rahman, acting primary education officer of the district, pointed to the new recruitment system where all the appointments have to be performed with the recommendation of PSC.
