Injured college student may lose both eyes, family loses hope

Dhaka College students stood in solidarity for Siddiqur Rahman, a third-year student of Titumir College, on Saturday in a protest on the Dhaka College campus. They then carried out a procession to Eden College in Azimpur and Science Lab. The students were demanding better treatment for the young man, who is about to lose both eyes. They also protested against the police aggression against them in an earlier protest, that led to Siddiqur’s injury. "We will make the same demand on July 24th and 25th. If it is not accepted, then the protest will carry over onto the other colleges,” Dhaka College student Kabir Hossain told the Dhaka Tribune. Siddiqur was injured last Friday in a demonstration he took part in with fellow students of seven affiliated colleges under the University of Dhaka. They were demanding that the university authorities announce the examination schedule and routine for entry to DU. In that demonstration, when police threw tear shells and rubber bullets at them, Siddiqur was hit with a tear shell in his left eye. Siddiqur underwent surgery on both of his eyes on the morning of July 22 at National Eye Science Institute Hospital | CourtesyThe youngest of five siblings in a poor family from Dhakerkanda village of Tarakanda upazilla in Mymensingh, he was seen as the one who would raise them into a better living situation. Siddiqur’s mother told the Dhaka Tribune: “That will not be possible now. My son will be unable to take the BCS examination. He may not get a job. All our efforts have gone in vain.” He underwent surgery on both of his eyes on Saturday morning at National Eye Science Institute Hospital in Agargaon where he is being treated. Financial help from classmates and relatives is helping to cover his medical costs, the young man’s father told Dhaka Tribune.
