A newborn was allegedly burned after a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) overheated at a private hospital in Dhaka’s Chankharpul area on Saturday.
The incident reportedly occurred shortly after the baby was admitted to the NICU at Royal Care and Surgical Hospital.
The newborn’s father, Golam Rabbani, said his child was born at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) early Saturday morning. As doctors informed him that no NICU beds were available there, he took the baby to Royal Care and Surgical Hospital at Chankharpul.
A short time after the newborn was admitted to the NICU, a fire-related incident occurred, allegedly due to overheating. The baby suffered partial burns to the head, back and legs, the father said.
He said the child was first taken to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery and was later referred to DMCH, where the newborn is currently receiving treatment.
“The doctors have told us that my child’s condition is not good,” Rabbani said.
The baby’s mother was admitted to DMCH on Friday night and gave birth to a boy at around 4am on Saturday.
The family’s home village is in Kahaloo Upazila of Bogra.
