Hospital vandalized in Mohammadpur over medical bill discount dispute

City Hospital and Diagnostic Centre in the capital’s Mohammadpur area was vandalized by a group of young men following a dispute over a discount on a patient's medical bill.

Several people have been arrested in connection with a case filed over the incident, and police are verifying their involvement.

The attack took place around midnight on Tuesday when a group of young men entered the hospital and vandalized the premises. The front section of the facility and its ground-floor reception area were damaged, with furniture and medical equipment left in disarray.

According to hospital sources, a patient named Asma had received treatment at the facility for a lip injury. Her medical bill amounted to Tk2,780, and her relatives requested a discount.

Hospital authorities agreed to reduce the bill partially, but an argument followed. After the patient received treatment and left, a group of young men gathered at the hospital and carried out the attack.

Mohammad Usman Gani, assistant manager of City Hospital Ltd, said the attackers had arrived from the direction of the Graphic Arts Institute.

He alleged that the attackers also looted the facility, causing an estimated Tk50-60 lakh in losses.

Police said they were reviewing CCTV footage to identify those involved. Hospital authorities have filed a case over the incident.

Abdul Halim, officer-in-charge of Mohammadpur police station, confirmed that several people had been arrested in connection with the case. Their involvement is being further investigated, he said.
