Police: 82 detained in Dhaka airport area crackdown

Airport Police Station detained 82 people during a crackdown in and around the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport area in the capital on Saturday.

The drive was conducted at the airport roundabout, the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) office area, the airport railway station, police box, airport entry points, VVIP and VIP roads, and surrounding areas.

According to police, those detained included 58 drug-addicted street children and 24 others allegedly involved in various offences.

Police said vagrants, beggars and drug addicts would not be allowed to remain in the airport area under any circumstances.

Police patrols are continuing, and the law-and-order situation remains normal, police said.

Niaz Mehdi, additional deputy commissioner of the Media and Public Relations Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), said necessary measures would be taken for the detained children through a Child Affairs Police Officer in accordance with the Children Act, 2013
