The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has completely banned the carrying of sharp and striking objects—including machetes, knives, scissors, spears, lances, swords, and sticks—as well as the use of fireworks and firecrackers during Tazia processions to be held on the occasion of the holy Ashura.
The information was announced in a public notice signed by DMP Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed on Tuesday.
According to the notice, Tazia processions will be held in various areas of Dhaka on Friday, June 26, marking the observance of holy Ashura.
In the past, some participants were seen carrying machetes, knives, scissors, spears, lances, swords, and sticks during the processions. In some cases, this led to unwanted situations, creating fear and panic among worshippers and city residents and posing a threat to public safety.
The notice further stated that fireworks and firecrackers are often used during the month of Muharram in connection with Ashura, which is not consistent with the solemn religious spirit of the occasion.
In view of the situation, the DMP, exercising its authority under Sections 28 and 29 of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Ordinance (Ordinance No. 3 of 1976), has declared the carrying of machetes, knives, scissors, spears, lances, swords, sticks, and the use of fireworks and firecrackers in Tazia processions strictly prohibited.
The DMP said the order will remain in force throughout the duration of the Tazia processions, from their beginning until their conclusion.
