Law minister: Supreme Judicial Council to handle allegations against judges

Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md Asaduzzaman has said that any allegation brought against a judge falls outside the jurisdiction of the government and will instead be dealt with by the Supreme Judicial Council.

He made the remarks on Saturday while speaking to reporters at a program held at BRAC Centre in the capital’s Mohakhali area. Responding to a question over an allegation involving a judge in connection with an incident at Wills Little Flower School and College, the minister clarified the government’s position.

“This is not a matter for the Ministry of Law. If there is any allegation of misconduct against a Supreme Court judge, it will be examined by the Supreme Judicial Council. The ministry or the government has no role or responsibility in this regard,” he said.

The event at BRAC Centre marked the release of findings from a joint research initiative by the Supreme Court of Bangladesh and BRAC. The study focused on procedural barriers in tribunals dealing with violence against women and children and explored ways to address those challenges. The law minister attended the program as the chief guest.

The controversy stems from an incident inside a classroom at Wills Little Flower School and College, which later triggered tensions within the institution. Teachers and students have alleged that following the incident, a secondary section teacher was summoned to the residence of a judge—who is also a guardian—and subjected to humiliation.

In response, students staged protests and submitted a memorandum to the Chief Justice through the Supreme Court Registrar General. The issue has also drawn significant attention on social media.

According to accounts from students and teachers, the incident began on April 16 during a Class 10 Bangla medium day-shift session. A student reportedly approached a physics teacher seeking help with a Bangla subject question. The teacher advised him to consult the Bangla teacher instead. When the student pressed again, he allegedly behaved inappropriately, prompting the teacher to slap him.

The teacher later said he contacted the student’s guardian and requested a meeting at the school. He was subsequently invited, through school authorities, to the guardian’s residence on April 18. Expecting a discussion to resolve the matter, he went there accompanied by another teacher. Instead, he claims he faced mental harassment during the meeting.
