Bangladeshi youths and workers demand climate justice

As world leaders meet in Belém, Brazil, for COP30, hundreds of young people, workers, and climate-affected communities in Dhaka joined the global climate strike on Friday, demanding climate justice and a renewable energy-based revision of Bangladesh’s fossil fuel-heavy energy plan (IEPMP).

Organized by YouthNet Global, Bangladesh Labour Foundation, NAJTB, and BILS under the slogan #JustTransitionNow, protesters called for a fast, fair, and funded just transition that protects people and the planet.

Activists carried banners rejecting fossil-fuel solutions and demanded a transition centred on people, safeguarding livelihoods, workers’ rights, and gender equality, and inclusion of youths and frontline communities in decision-making.

Sohanur Rahman, Executive Coordinator of YouthNet Global, said the strike was a united call for jobs, justice, and dignity, urging transparent investment in solar and wind energy and equitable, grant-based climate finance to ensure no one is left behind.
