Professor Dr Muhammad Tazammol Hoque, proctor of Jagannath University, said that ragging is a punishable offense and will not be tolerated under any circumstances at the university.
He made the statement in a Facebook post on Sunday, addressing the arrival of newly admitted students.
Extending his greetings to the freshers, Professor Dr Muhammad Tazammol Hoque said: “As new members of the Jagannath University family, I warmly congratulate and welcome you. Your presence at this historic academic institution is a source of pride and joy for us.”
He further said: “We believe that through higher education, you will not only shape your own future but also be inspired by human values, honesty and a strong sense of responsibility. A university is a place of tolerance, cooperation, and harmony—here, we are all companions on the same journey.”
On the matter of ragging, he said: “Incidents of ragging often occur with the arrival of new students on campus. If any student attempts to harass freshers—physically, mentally or verbally—strict administrative action will be taken. We also urge that any instance of harassment be promptly reported to the departmental student adviser and chairman, the proctorial body, the director of Student Welfare, relevant student affairs committees, the office of the treasurer, or the vice-chancellor.”
Expressing his hope for a ragging-free campus, he concluded: “We aspire to create a vibrant, safe and encouraging academic environment. Let us all work together to build a positive and ragging-free campus.”
