DMP: Taking law into own hands will not be tolerated

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has warned that any attempt to take the law into one’s own hands will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, Deputy Commissioner of Media and Public Relations Muhammad Talebur Rahman referred to an incident that occurred in the early hours of the day, when 15–20 men attempted to forcibly enter a house by breaking its gate in Dhanmondi.

Upon receiving a call through the national emergency service, officers from Dhanmondi police station rushed to the scene and tried to stop the group and bring the situation under control. However, the men became aggressive towards the police.

According to the deputy commissioner, the group had gathered to pressure law enforcement into arresting one Md Golam Mostafa. In response, police detained three individuals at the scene and took them to the station.

They were released at around 3:30pm on Tuesday after signing a bond promising not to engage in similar unlawful acts in the future.

The DMP urged all citizens to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and to respect the rule of law by cooperating with law enforcement agencies.

The press release also requested that anyone facing unnecessary harassment, or witnessing any unlawful act committed to serve personal interests, immediately report the matter by calling the national emergency number 999 or by contacting the nearest police station.

The DMP reiterated that any future attempts to cause unrest or take the law into one’s own hands will be dealt with strictly.
