Auto-rickshaws banned on main roads to restore order

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka Metropolitan Police launched a joint operation on Tuesday to enforce the ban on battery-powered rickshaws on the capital’s main roads. Several unauthorized rickshaws were seized and destroyed as part of the drive aimed at restoring discipline on the roads.

Financial aid and rehabilitation support have been extended to three affected drivers. At an event held on Wednesay, at the DNCC Administrator’s Office, cheques of Tk50,000 each were handed over to the drivers—Md Khalil from Sirajganj, Russell Mia from Mymensingh, and Sumon Mridha from Barisal—totaling Tk150,000 in aid.

“Our primary goal is to restore order on the roads,” said DNCC Administrator Mohammad Azaz. “While we are providing assistance on humanitarian grounds, the operation of illegal rickshaws will no longer be permitted. The government is already implementing training programs to help affected drivers find alternative means of income.”

He further noted that the approval and training process for battery-powered rickshaws, as authorized by Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet), is moving forward. Under Brac’s initiative, around 100,000 rickshaw drivers will receive training and be rehabilitated into new livelihoods.

DNCC Chief Executive Officer Abu Saeed Mohammad Kamruzzaman, Regional Executive Officer A N M Badruddoza, and other senior officials were also present at the event.

The DNCC Administrator emphasized that alongside strict enforcement, ensuring sustainable alternatives for affected drivers remains a top priority. He said the goal would be achieved through a coordinated effort between the government and supporting organizations.
