Three sentenced to life in gang rape of teenager

A tribunal has sentenced three people to life in prison in a gang rape case of a 13-year-old teenager in the capital's Kamrangirchar five years ago.

The court of Judge Munshi Md Moshiar Rahman of Dhaka's Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 gave the verdict on Wednesday.

The life convicts are - Mohan, son of Jamal Uddin of Faridpur village in Dhunat upazila of Bogra, Sabbir, son of Md Mizan of Mukundgati village in Belkuchi upazila of Sirajganj, and Rasel, son of Kamal alias Abul Kalam of Chikandi village under Palang Model police station (Sadar) in Shariatpur.

In addition to the sentence, they will have to pay a fine of Tk1 lakh, and in default of payment, they will have to undergo another year of simple imprisonment.

Two children named Omar and Falan have been sentenced to 10 years in prison along with a fine of Tk1 lakh and one year of community service in default.

Prosecutor of the concerned court Ershad Alam (George) confirmed the sentence.

He said: "The three accused who were sentenced to life imprisonment are in jail. They were produced in court today (Wednesday). After the verdict, they were sent to jail with a sentence warrant. Two children are absconding. An arrest warrant along with a sentence warrant has been issued against them."

On June 17, 2020, the accused took the victim to the 4th floor of the under-construction building of Nur Alam's house in Hasan Nagar under Kamrangirchar police station and raped her. The victim's mother filed a case in this incident. After investigating the case, Inspector Mohammad Mustafa Anwar of Kamrangirchar police station accused five people and submitted a charge sheet to the court.
