Students protest violence against women at Shahbagh

Students from various educational institutions in the capital gathered at Shahbagh on Tuesday to protest violence against women.

The demonstration began at 11:30am as small processions arrived at the location, and the protesters said that the program would continue until the evening.

According to the demonstrators, most of them are students from different schools and colleges in Dhaka. They expressed their outrage over the recent incidents of violence against women across the country and demanded swift justice for the victims.

During the protest, students chanted various anti-violence slogans, including "Death penalty, death penalty, we want the rapists to be hanged!"; "Justice, justice, we want justice!"; "In my golden Bengal, there is no place for rapists!"; and "Ignite, ignite, set the fire!"

The protesters initially announced a "Shahbagh Blockade" program to protest against violence against women. However, considering public inconvenience during Ramadan, they withdrew the blockade. Instead, they decided to hold a sit-in protest on the adjacent empty road in front of the National Museum, which will continue until the evening.

Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies have taken precautionary measures around the demonstration. Police officials said that they have surrounded the protesting students and are prepared to handle any untoward incidents if necessary.
